KOENIG&BAUER

OVERVIEW

Koenig & Bauer introduced Palatin, a new banknote material derived from plant-based sources — alongside a brief to develop a marketing strategy rooted in its sustainable origins. The challenge was to translate a technical material innovation into a compelling brand narrative that communicated both credibility and environmental purpose.

About the project

Description

Palatin's transparency is put to work on two levels: housing all authentication features within the material itself, and revealing an embedded real seed visible through the note's surface. When the banknote completes its lifecycle, it is recycled and the seed returned to the earth, a currency designed to give back as much as it carries.

My role

I developed the overarching marketing narrative, building a compelling story around Palatin's sustainable origins to anchor the brand strategy. From there, I led the full design process: concepting and designing the banknote, crafting physical prototypes to explore the material's possibilities, and refining through to a finalised design resolution.

Palatin material mockup — a plant-derived, naturally transparent substrate that redefines what a banknote can be made of.
